Effective leadership

Leaders in a family business are often required to don multiple hats in order to balance the complexities of family members and professionals within the organization. While it is necessary for a leader to be nimble in their leadership approach, it is also important for every leader to evaluate and determine the style of their leadership.

Most good leaders dare to be more than just the position they hold; they aspire to be a person who will lead from the front. In order to be an effective leader, one must put the power aside, checking oneself at every stage to ensure that power is not dominating the leadership process. Excellent leaders are self-assured, yet humble enough to admit their mistakes and take responsibility for their actions. Good leaders also surround themselves with talent and seek expertise where required. They use their talent well, and work to gain commitment, rather than compliance. Mostly, good leaders are honest and value integrity above all else – their actions are always aligned to their thoughts.

For a leader who wishes to lead people effectively, it is important for him/her to master the principles listed above and follow them in every action.
