Tatwamasi Thursdays – The Next Generation

Usually in India, where patriarchy is generally practiced, where most business families introduce the next generation to their family business at an early age, depriving them of the opportunity to work in an organization and get outside experience. However the times are changing. For example, Adi Godrej, chairman of the Godrej Group, believes that family members need to work in outside companies to get a certain kind of exposure that is only possible if one is away from his/her organization’s safe zone. When one isn’t associated with the company it gives them a different perspective and an outlook that one doesn’t receive in their own organization. This trend is soon catching up in India. Besides gaining broader experience outside the family business, the other advantages include – A self esteem boost and confidence to take on challenges, they gain wider work experience, and by doing this they also gain credibility with the non-family employees, which goes a long way in shaping one’s career demograph.
